Weight vs Drag
An interesting article was published recently by MHW Magazine on fuel saving. It questioned whether fuel savings should come from reducing vehicle weight or reducing vehicle aerodynamic drag. Correctly it concluded that weight and drag influence vehicle fuel consumption differently: Vehicles travelling at high speed benefit from aerodynamic improvements, while vehicles with lots of stop-start (acceleration) benefit from weight saving. But we knew that, didn’t we?
In the end the article concludes “its horses for courses”. Therefore we need to know if you spend £10k on weight savings or £10k on aerodynamic improvements which one will give you a return on investment in 24 months? The exact answer lies in how vehicles are used on a daily basis, how much they can be improved (aerodynamics or weight), and how much the improvements cost.
