The challenge
Like most large UK fleets, ASDA’s tyre policy was optimised for a low pence-per-kilometre (PPK) rate, using hard-wearing deep-tread tyres. That approach can extend tyre life, but it significantly increases fuel consumption — often negating any cost saving on the tyre itself.
ASDA is one of the largest grocers in the UK, operating hundreds of heavy goods vehicles with a significant fuel bill. Naturally, they wanted to see for themselves how alternative tyre choice could save fuel on their exact vehicle configuration.
Getting the balance right between tyre policy price and fuel performance is a complex science and is unique to each fleet operation. Without empirical evidence, fleets risk underestimating how much tyre choice drives whole-life cost.
The approach
Over four days at Millbrook Proving Ground, Dynamon ran controlled scientific trials on ASDA trucks to measure the impact of tyre choice on fuel consumption and to validate Tyre Analytics predictions.
Michelin supplied fuel-efficient X® LINE™ ENERGY™ tyres to compare with ASDA’s current hard-wearing deep-tread tyre policy. To keep inflation pressure correct throughout the test, Continental’s ContiPressureCheck™ was connected to MiX Telematics so pressure and temperature could be monitored in real time.
The trial was designed to isolate tyre effect under controlled conditions — demonstrating both the real fuel impact of a policy change and that Dynamon’s analytics could accurately predict relative fuel consumption for different tyre types.
The results
The Millbrook tests measured a 17% fuel saving by changing from ASDA’s low-PPK-cost tyre policy to a tyre policy optimised for fuel performance.
Controlled track results do not fully replicate real-world operations. In day-to-day use, weather, terrain and driver behaviour also matter — realistic fuel savings from optimising tyres are typically closer to 5–12%, depending on the operation. Even at that level, the opportunity for large fleets can still run to millions of pounds per year, with savings that can start in the first year of implementation.
ASDA went on to work with Dynamon to identify an optimum tyre policy that balances fuel performance and PPK price for significant overall cost savings.
