East Renfrewshire Council: Electric fleet feasibility

Zero28 October 2026By Dynamon

East Renfrewshire Council’s vehicles work locally, from the main depot at Thornliebank and a set of smaller sites. With Webfleet, Dynamon used ZERO to replay three months of telematics and test cars, vans, rigids, refuse vehicles and minibuses on depot charging, with home charging for the cars.

Key outcomes

  • 305,569 miles of Webfleet telematics from 3 September to 1 December 2025. 175 of 193 vehicles had driving data, about 51 driving days each, across 47 locations.
  • About 98% of duty cycles. At Thornliebank the average day was 35 miles. With 50 kW charging at the depot, and no charge on the road, about 98% of duty cycles were completed.
  • The heavier vehicles follow. The cars completed every recorded day. Vans, refuse vehicles, rigids and minibuses were in the nineties, with 22 kW charging at the smaller sites.

What ZERO showed

The fleet list is 193 vehicles. Webfleet covered 175 of them. ZERO registered 47 locations. The pattern is urban: the miles sit around Thornliebank and the south side of Glasgow, rather than on long trunk routes. At the main depot the average day was 35 miles, and vehicles were parked overnight for more than 17 hours.

That stop is long enough to put the energy back. ZERO tested an electric specification for each class, with 50 kW charging at Thornliebank and 22 kW at the smaller sites. The 19 cars, on a 77 kWh battery and with home charging as well as the depot, completed all 728 recorded routes, against an average of 26 miles a day. Medium and heavy vans, between about 30 and 44 miles a day, completed about 93% to 99%. Two-axle refuse vehicles averaged 58 miles and completed about 90%. The larger three-axle refuse vehicles averaged 38 miles and completed about 92%. Rigids and minibuses were at or near 100%. Charging belongs at Thornliebank first, with a smaller provision at the other sites and a charger at home for the cars.

Where the fleet drove, from the Webfleet telematics. Red is where vehicles spent the most time, around Thornliebank and the south side of Glasgow.

Three months of Webfleet telematics, a class-by-class electric specification, and depot charging that starts at Thornliebank: that is what Dynamon prepared so East Renfrewshire Council can replace an urban fleet that does not travel far.
