M Group: Electric fleet feasibility for Hampshire Highways

Zero28 October 2026By Dynamon

M Group Highways runs Hampshire’s roads for the county council, and is working towards net zero operations by 2040. Dynamon used ZERO to replay the contractor’s own telematics and test which vans and heavy vehicles could go electric, and whether charging belonged at the depot, at home, or on the go. The council’s cars and winter gritters from the same study are in the Hampshire County Council case study.

Key outcomes

  • 310,639 miles of historical telematics, from September to November 2025: 120 vehicles and 5,672 duty cycles, across the Hampshire Highways fleet.
  • Small rigids were ready. They park at the depot overnight, so 7 kW depot charging covered almost every recorded day.
  • The vans needed 50 kW. Rapid depot charging, not a bigger battery, is what made nearly all of their days feasible. Vehicles taken home needed a charger there too.

What ZERO showed

M Group’s Hampshire fleet runs from panel vans to heavy rigids, sharing six depots with the council’s cars and a 44-vehicle winter gritter fleet. ZERO replayed the historical telematics — 310,639 miles and 5,672 duty cycles from 120 vehicles — as electric duty cycles. The gritters did not have the same telematics, so their routes were turned into a further 22,709 miles and 424 duty cycles.

The comparison was 7 kW charging at the depot, 50 kW rapid charging at the depot, home charging where a vehicle is taken home overnight, and on-the-go charging where the recorded day could not be finished from the depot alone. The days are short, so the battery was rarely the limit. Small rigids that return to the depot overnight were ready on 7 kW. Panel vans stop only briefly, so 50 kW at the depot is what made them feasible. That is the specification M Group can procure against: which vehicles, and whether the charger sits at the depot, at home, or on the go.

Winter gritters share the depots with M Group’s vans and rigids, so the charging plan covers both.

Vehicle by vehicle, from the fleet’s own records: that is the basis Dynamon gave M Group for ordering electric vans and rigids, and the chargers to go with them.
